The aim of the present work was to investigate the efficacy of different spray methods (standard fan and full cone hydraulic nozzles and a spinning disc) for the application of infective juveniles (IJs) of Steinernema carpocapsae against insect pests on foliage. Larvae of Plutella xylostella on Chinese cabbage were used as a model system. The higher output hydraulic nozzles deposited the greatest number of IJs onto leaves and gave the greatest insect mortality (up to 98%). However, the spinning disc gave nearly 50% mortality while applying less than 9% of the IJs compared with the most effective of the hydraulic nozzles. This suggests that further work on low volume (spinning disc) systems is justified and may lead to cost-effective applications of nematodes. The present work is discussed in relation to the timing of foliar applications and the effects of various abiotic and biotic factors.
