Evaluation of Korean softwood plywood bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive
2004
Oh, Y.S. | Lee, J.K.
A urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin was formulated in the laboratory for plywood manufacture. Specification characteristics were determined on the UF resin, including nonvolatile solids, gel time, and viscosity, etc. The UF resin was mixed with extender, filler, and NH4Cl. The mixture, which contained approximately 38.7 percent resin solids, 56.1 percent total solids, and 43.9 percent water, was used to bond three Korean softwood plywood types under 120 degrees C, 1379 kPa, and 4 minutes hot-pressing conditions. The plywood panels were tested after a vacuum-soak (48 degrees C water) aging method of the U.S. Product Standard PS 1-95, and after a 3-hour soak (60 degrees C water) aging method of the Korean Standard KS F 3101. For all three wood species, after both accelerated-aging methods, plywood shear strength and wood failure exceeded the two interior plywood standards.
