Clinical chemical methods for the routine assessment of the vitamin status in human populations. Part I: The fat-soluble vitamins A and E, and beta-carotene

A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system and method is described for the analysis of vitamin A (as retinol), beta-carotene, and vitamin E in human plasma. The method employs 3 separate HPLC lines (1 for each of the analysis parameters) under optimal isocratic conditions using silica gel as the stationary phase. A single sample extract is charged to all 3 lines. At full capacity, the HPLC system allows a daily throughput of 48 samples run in duplicate (288 separate assays). Results for 150 blood donors are reported, including correlations of vitamin A with retinol-binding protein, and of vitamin E with beta-lipoproteins. (wz)
