Influence of dietary cholesterol on mitochondrial function in the rat

Tests with rats fed lard and cholesterol diets show that cholesterol eaters were associated with reduction of liver mitochondrial respiratory control, and free cholesterol was related to desensitization of mitochondria to the phosphorylation inhibitors. Mitochondrial functions of organ tissues were not responsive to changes in dietary cholesterol and no increases were noted in free cholesterol content. Mitochondrial cholesterol esters in organ tissues remained at extremely low levels for all treatments. Inclusion of a hypocholesterolemic agent in the diet prevented elevation of rat-liver cholesterol esters and restored mitochondrial functions of respiratory control. The agent did not lower the raised level of liver mitochondrial free cholesterol or the reduced mitochondrial sensitivity to the phosphorylation inhibitors.
