Laparoscopy versus ultrasound guided renal biopsy in dogs using automated biopsy gun
2016
The study was conducted on eight apparently healthy dogs, divided into two groups. Renal core tissue biopsies were obtained under ultrasound and laparoscopic visual guidance in animals of groups I and II, respectively, with a double spring loaded automatic 16G biopsy gun having 19 mm biopsy notch. The success rate to obtain the target tissue (100% in group II and 73% in group I), mean sample size (18±0.33 mm in group II and 12±0.96 mm in group I), and number of glomeruli (15.88±2.75 in group II and 9.13±2.54 in group I) were significantly higher (P<0.05) in laparoscopy group. Both techniques provided biopsy samples of diagnostic quality and post-biopsy self limiting haematuria was a minor complication with both techniques. Though ultrasound guided needle biopsy was comparatively easier to perform and less time consuming, it can result in massive haemorrhage by inexperienced user.
