Nutrients uptake by Pomegranates (Punica granatum, L) transplants grown in highly calcareous soil conditioned with bitumen emulsion

One of the techniques that can be applied to improve plant-soil-water relations in calcareous soils which are abundant in Egypt is the use of synthesized soil conditioners. Incorporating bitumen emulsion in the highly calcareous soil can avail better conditions for growing Pomegranate plants in their early stage of growth. Dry weight of the growing plants and their content of nutrients (N.P.K. and Ca) are significantly increased with this respect, an application rate of 0.5% bitumen for the none saline soil and 2 to 3% bitumen for the highly saline one could be recommended for producing 175 plants of Pomegranate to be retransplanted in one feddan (4200 m/2) of such soils, 31.5 Kgs and from 125 to 190 Kgs of the locally made bitumen emulsion are needed for both soils, respectively. Therefore, costs of used bitumen will be 3.15 and 12.5 to 19 LEG i.e. 1.25 and from 5.00 to 7.50 US$ respectively which is economically justified.
