A technical review discusses the dietary requirements of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's) by term and preterm infants, emphasizing the research findings of the author. Specific attention is focused on: cord blood levels and placental transfer of PUFA's in the fetus; the composition of PUFA's in fetal tissue and low birth weight infants; causes of the essential fatty acid deficiency syndrome and its effects; dietary requirements of PUFA's; and the question of the utility and administration mode of dietary supplements of PUFA's. The toxic effects of excessive intakes of PUFA's in infants also are discussed.(wz)
