A training program using video and printed materials was implemented at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) to teach new staff the necessary job skills to collect, analyze, and disseminate chemical information. The program was designed to eliminate inconsistencies in training, minimize friction between trainer and trainee, and reduce the number of professional staff required. Five units were developed that focused on different areas of chemistry (i.e., biochemistry, organic, macromolecular, applied, and physical/inorganic/analytical). This allowed for manageability and updating. The equipment required included video cameras, recorders, monitors, microphones, and lights. Two staff members were assigned as permanent trainers. Two types of testing were involved, self-testing during instruction and end-of-unit evaluations. The trainees work on materials during breaks in the video; when the video resumes, immediate feedback is provided for that information. Training is completed when the trainee has met quality and quantity job standards. Because all trainees receive the same information, it is easier to standardize tests, measure progress, and evaluate performance. (kbc)
