The role of calcium in genetic hypertension

A detailed literature review (144 references) critically analyzes pertinent available data concerning the association of calcium (Ca) and genetic hypertension, covering both human and animal studies. Following a review of evidence of Ca deficiency in genetic hypertension gleamed from recent clinical and animal investigations, attention is focused on membrane defects in Ca regulation, the role of parathyroid hormone in hypertension, and the possible multi-functional biochemical effect of Ca ion on vascular reactivity. A hypothetical model for the role of Ca in genetic hypertension suggests that the renal tubule is abnormally Na retentive before the onset of hypertension, which expands the intrathoracic blood volume and ultimately increases cellular Na content. The possible ramifications of this model for Ca-hypertension associations are discussed.(wz)
