Normal electrolyte and protein content in milk from mothers with cystic fibrosis: An explanation for the initial report of elevated milk sodium concentration

Normal electrolyte and total protein contents were found in serial measurements of breast milk from 2 patients (an age 22 white primigravida, and an age 27 white multigravida) diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at about 4 years of age. Infant nursing was successful for a test period of 11 weeks. The analytical results indicated that electrolytes and macronutrients in breast milk of CF patients are normal. The observed elevated sodium (Na) content of expressed milk was caused by stasis of colostrum and reequilibration of breast secretions with interstitial fluid. The Na content in the mother's mature milk (15 days postpartum and later) ranged from 4.1-10.2 milliequivalents/L as compared to a range of 4.3-10.3 milliequivalents/L in mature milk from healthy women.
