FDA's dietary sodium initiative--in the war against hypertension, a new weapon

The US Food and Drug Administration's sodium (Na) initiative is discussed in view of the suspected association between elevated Na intake and hypertension development. Five objectives of the initiative are cited: encouragement of voluntary reduction of Na additions to foods by the food industry; enhancement of food labeling effectiveness in indicating the Na content of foods; enhancement of consumer awareness of the health impact of excess Na intake; monitoring of changes in Na consumption, the Na content of foods, and consumer perceptions to assess progress in reducing Na intakes; and the consideration of legislation needs should voluntary compliance be unsuccessful. The justification of this initiative and its potential health benefits are discussed. (wz)
