Tree allometry allows an estimation of biomass and carbon stocks. However, tree growth patterns depend on genetic and environmental factors that vary significantly across borders. Pistachio orchards are expanding in the world and offer opportunities for enhancing carbon storage. Carbon sequestration is linked to water consumption in addition to other ecological factors. Pistachio trees (Pistacia vera L.) grow under different tree forms, orchard layouts and management practices at particular sites. Biomass models are not available for producing trees growing in California. Consequently, modeling of Pistachio growth is needed to yield accurate tree biomass estimates for this growing commodity in California. In this study we present our analysis based on destructive and non-destructive sampling techniques in producing Pistachio trees of ages 1 to 40 planted across the state. This work was used to construct an equation for the species to estimate total above and belowground biomass. This study is of interest for comparison of total tree biomass at an international level in different production regions based on regional tree growth rates, tree structure, pruning cycles, pruning techniques, water use and orchard management practices.
