Saccharin unsafe--despite the headlines
1980
Jacobson, Michael
Recent epidemiological studies indicate that women who use artificial sweeteners have an increased risk of bladder cancer. These studies have several defects, such as looking only at bladder cancer and failing to distinguish between cyclamates and saccharin. Because of these weaknesses, it has been suggested that the pinpointing of small but potentially important increases in the human risk of cancer due to saccharin is practically impossible. Nevertheless, other members of the scientific community reiterate the concern that saccharin may be a weak carcinogen. Consequently, such groups as children, young people, pregnant women, and heavy saccharin users seem to have an increased risk of bladder cancer.
