Effects of paclobutrazol and N6-benzyladenine on growth of chrysanthemum ‘Cayman’

Shoots, about 1 cm long, of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora) ‘Cayman’ were cultured on modified MS medium supplemented with 0.5-1.5 mg L-1 paclobutrazol (PBZ) singly or in combinations with 1-2 mg L-1 N6-benzyladenine (BA). All explants were cultured for two-culture cycles with a 5-week interval. For treatments comprising of the combinations of PBZ and BA; BA was omitted in the second culture cycle. Length of shoots (1.02-1.45 cm) and number of nodes (4.1-7.9) were reduced when higher concentrations of PBZ or BA were applied, compared to the control set without PBZ and BA (9.82 cm long, 10.6 nodes and 1.0 shoot). Higher numbers of shoots (11.3-15.7) were found from BA while only one shoot was obtained from PBZ. Medium containing 1.5 mg L-1 PBZ in combinations with 1.0 or 2.0 mg L-1 BA provided the best results with 0.50-0.78 cm long, 7.6-8.0 nodes and 4.0-4.5 shoots at the first culture cycle and 4.8-5.52 cm long, 7.4-7.6 nodes and 2.1-2.8 shoots at the second culture cycle.
