Influence of maternal chloride intake on fluoride utilization by rat offspring
1989
Cerklewski, F.L.
A factorial experiment was conducted with pregnant rats, fed a purified diet throughout gestation and the first 15 days of lactation, to determine the influence of dietary chloride (0.70 or 1.35 g/kg as NaC1) on fluoride utilization (2 or 10 mg/kg as NaF) by offspring. The 5-fold difference in maternal fluoride intake significantly increased fluoride concentration of maternal and offspring femur and offspring 1st and 2nd molar teeth. Although maternal femur fluoride was unaffected by the level of dietary chloride, offspring fluoride content of femur, 1st molar and 2nd molar in the low chloride group was significantly greater than the normal chloride group for either dietary fluoride level by 32, 100 and 50-60% respectively. Offspring fluoride utilization can therefore be enhanced by reducing the chloride content of the maternal diet.
