Axillary bud formation in two isogenic lines of tomato showing different degrees of apical dominance

Grafting experiments have been carried out in which rootstocks of the cultivar Craigella were paired with scions of an isogenic line Craigella Lateral Suppressor (ls ls) and vice versa, and the levels of hormones in the roots and shoots of the grafted plants examined. The roots of Craigella plants differed from those of Lateral Suppressor in that they contained a higher proportion of a cytokinin that co-chromatographed with N6 - (Δ2—isopentenyl) adenosine. Reciprocal grafts did not lead to any qualitative or quantitative changes in the cytokinins in the roots of either line. Grafting Lateral Suppressor scions on Craigella rootstocks led to an increase in the IAA content of the apical region and the ABA content of the stem tissue immediately below it, but when Craigella scions were grafted on Lateral Suppressor rootstocks there were no changes in the level of either hormone. Cytokinins applied to the leaf axils of Lateral Suppressor plants resulted in lateral bud initiation in the axils above the point of treatment but not if the plants were also given a short period of far-red light at the end of the photoperiod. Cytokinins were ineffective in initiating lateral buds in grafted Lateral Suppressor scions. It is suggested that root-produced cytokinins influence lateral bud outgrowth indirectly by way of their effect on the levels of IAA and ABA in the shoot.
