Epidemiological data regarding home enteral nutrition (HEN) in France are not well known and give rise to imprecise estimates. It is thanks to the improvement of the legal frame in France that the studies of incidence and prevalence of HEN have become possible. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective and observational study has been carried out thanks to the help of the local health care units (part of the national health insurance services) which indicated for 2011 and 2012, (1) the number of new patients having started a HEN, (2) the total number of patients having benefited from HEN with or without pump. Once the reference population was known (i.e.: the “protected” population, benefiting from health insurance), these data enabled us to determine the exact yearly incidence and prevalence of HEN. RESULTS: We were able to obtain the data from 15 French administrative regions, representing a population of 39.8 million: the average incidence of HEN was of 24.9/100,000 inhabitants per year and the average prevalence of 57.3/100,000 inhabitants per year. Depending on the administrative areas, there are important disparities regarding the rates of incidence (13.0 to 47.6) as well as the rates of prevalence (29.1 to 96.2). Incidences and prevalences are especially high after the age of 40 and mostly after the age of 60. CONCLUSION: This is the first study determining in a reliable way the incidence and prevalence of HEN in France. Thus, the projection of these figures for a French population estimated to 65.5 million in 2012 leads to an estimate of around 37,500 HEN patients per year. Depending on the administrative areas, there are important disparities that will have to be confirmed in later studies.
