Continuity and change: the hydrography of Austria—creating 125 years of water knowledge | Kontinuität und Wandel: Die Hydrographie Österreichs – 125 Jahre Wasser-Wissen schaffen
2019
Godina, Reinhold
The past 125 years brought various social and technical changes. A story can be told that spans across centuries from the monarchy to the European Union, from the recording chart to the data collector, from the telegraphic water level transmission to transmission via satellite. The hydrography of Austria—founded in 1894—despite many adversities, stayed true to its original form and structure over the years. Climate change and the rapid progress of digital data processing require new solutions from the Hydrography of Austria, especially regarding the compilation and exploration of large datasets, one could even call it Big Data. Historical data sets must be integrated into a new digital database that is sustainably designed to manage long time series. Although the Hydrographic Yearbook is still publicized, it is no longer the only form in which audited data and evaluations in regards to the planning of water management activities are made available and accessible for the public and the scientific community.
