Peer review is the process of assessment of the quality and efficiency of services provided by members of the same profession. The object of peer review is assessment of individual professional performance, whereas the object of an audit is assessment of the level of conformance to established criteria by an entire professional group. Evaluation in the areas of nutritional status assessment, nutritional care plans, documentation, patient counseling, and diet diagnosis relationship is suggested for dietitian peer review. The entire staff should be involved in defining objectives and drafting criteria. After ratification of the criteria, a specific time should be set for the review; results should be summarized and discussed with the reviewee. The advantages of review are: quality assurance is promoted, group cohesion is enhanced, and awareness of the need for continuing education and professional growth is increased.
