This work was carried out to test, at laboratory scale, the effectiveness of different steam application techniques (sub-surface steam injection, surface steam application by means of iron plate and sheet steaming) against selected soil-borne pathogens in sandy-loam soil. The role of moisture content was also studied, in order to determine the soil conditions that maximize the effect of different steam application methods, also in order to implement them under practical conditions. The effect of different steam treatments was evaluated by considering the survival of induced benomyl resistant strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani (ATCC 64105 RB), F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (ATCC 16600 RB), F. oxysporum f. sp. basilica (Fob009RB). The steam injection system was the most efficient in terms of chlamydospore reduction in the steamed sandy soil at 40 and 80% of soil capacity compared with pan steam treatment.
