Genetic diversity studies among Farmers’ varieties/landraces of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) of Andaman & Nicobar Islands

In order to utilize landraces farmers’ varieties of mungbean for the development of essentially derived varieties (EDV), DUS characterization of the landraces that constitute the mini gene pool of mungbean were characterized for identification of useful genetic diversity. Inthe present study, evaluated 51 accessions of mungbean (Vigna radiata) were sown during 2015–16 and 2016–17 to generate basic information and assess the genetic diversity among farmers’ varieties/landraces of mungbean on the basis of DUS descriptors and agro-morphological traits. Among the genotypes almost all the traits exhibited highly significant variation. High genetic (GCV) as well as phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were noticed for number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant. High heritability was observed for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, length of pods and 100 seed weight. High genetic advance was observed for number of branches/plant, number of pods/plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield/plant. The UPGMA clustering late growing all the genotypes in to six major clusters. The ANFVM-14-12 and AN-FVM-15-20 being morphologically unique with desirable agro-economic traits, formed small divergent clusters and hence, may serve as valuable material for genetic improvement in mungbean through selection/hybridization. AN-FVM-14-02 and AN-FVM-14-03 and ANFVM-14-04 were found to have distinct seed colour and yield attributes respectively.
