Hematocrit values in white, black, and American Indian children with comparable iron status
1984
Yip, R. | Schwartz, S. | Deinard, A.S.
A case-control study compared hematocrit values of 425 black and 164 American Indian children with an equal number of white children who had been matched for major factors (age, sex, Fe status) associated with variation in hemoglobin and hematocrit values. The average hematocrit value for black children was 0.7 per cent lower than that of white children, while no difference was found in hematocrit values between American Indian and white children. It is suggested that the lower hematocrit value in black children may be due to mild thalassemias.(wz)
