Variability of chrysanthemum leaf blight pathogen Alternaria alternata (Fries) Kiessler

Plant pathogens show variability in phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. The level of variability affects the growth, sporulation, virulence and pathogenecity, toxin production which has influence on disease development and management. The variability of various isolates of Alternaria alternata (Fries) Kiessler that cause Chrysanthemum leaf blight was studied. Eleven isolates were collected from various Andhra Pradesh districts like Chittor, Kurnool, Ananthapur, Kadapa, Krishna, Guntur, East Godavari, Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Khammam, Warangal. Colony diameter varied from 3.25 cm (Khammam) to 8.5 cm (Kadapa). The conidial width varied from 10.4 μm (Guntur) to 4.73 μm (Kadapa), length ranged from 20.80 μm (East Godavari) to 11.8 μm (Kadapa). The PDI varied from 38.34% (Kadapa) to 13.34% (Khammam). Minimum incubation period of 4 days recorded in Ananthapur, Kadapa, Guntur, East Godavari isolates. The number of components in toxins extracted from various isolates varied from 1- 4, whose Rf values were varied. The toxin at 1500 ppm concentration was more lethal than 1000 and 500 ppm. The percent necrotic area due to toxin application at 500 ppm varied from 50% (Kadapa) to 5% (Ananthapur, East Godavari, Rangareddy and Warangal).
