Genetic Diversity and Characters Association Studies in Summer Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

The investigation on genetic diversity and characters association studies in summer groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was conducted on 50 genotypes of groundnut to know the variability and interrelation among the traits. The treatment differences were statistically significant for all the characters except peg to pod ratio and also the magnitude of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variations indicated the presence of good amount of variability. The character number of pegs per plant showed the highest heritability followed by dry pod yield per plant, number of mature pods per plant. The number of pegs per plant showed the highest genetic advance. Other characters showed moderate to low genetic advance. The range of D² values indicated adequate diversity between genotypes. On the basis of D² values, all the fifty genotypes were grouped into five clusters with substantial genetic divergence between them. Cluster I with 46 genotypes emerged as the largest cluster. Remaining four clusters were monogenotypic. The maximum inter cluster distance was found between cluster I and cluster V, while the minimum inter cluster distance was found between cluster III and cluster II. On the basis of cluster means, inter cluster distances and per se performance, the following seven genotypes of summer groundnut have been suggested for future hybridization programme.
