The present investigation comprised of sixty-four genotypes of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) was undertaken to characterize the genotypes based on morphological characters of seed like seed size, seed shape, seed colour, seed splitting, seed ridges and test weight (weight of 1000 seeds in grams). All these seed characters clearly differentiated the genotypes into different groups. Based on visual appearance of seed size, all genotypes were categorised (fifteen genotypes were grouped as small seeded, thirty genotypes as medium seeded and nineteen genotypes as bold seeded group), based on seed shape (twenty-eight genotypes were clubbed into oval shape, twenty-three genotypes as slightly elongated and thirteen genotypes were clubbed as round shape), based on seed colour (twenty genotypes were observed as dark brown, 34 genotypes in brown and 10 genotypes were under light brown seed colour), based on seed splitting (seven genotypes were showed seed splitting present and fifty-seven genotypes showed seed splitting absent), based on seed ridges (fifty-one genotypes had prominent seed ridges and thirteen genotypes had nonprominent seed ridges) and based on test weight[(six genotypes were found to have lightweight (<10 g) seed, thirty-nine genotypes have medium weight (10.1–15 g) seed and nineteen genotypes have heavy weight (>15g seed). A schematic diagram based on seed characters, showing higher resolution in terms of differentiating the genotypes was prepared. The study important to differentiate the available coriander germplasm to claim for registration without any legal problems related to IPR issues of plant variety protection.
