Development and Field Evaluation of Corn-Stover Collector attachment for Maize Combine Harvester

Corn stover is the non-grain portion of the plant and consists of the stalk, leaf, cob, and husk fractions. Corn stover has the greatest potential as a biomass. Corn stover has great significance, where the harvest of maize ears and their natural drying is widely applied. It has been observed that the share of maize plant parts are 31.88% grain, 52.12% stalk, 11.52% cob, and 4.48% husk, on wet basis (at 20% m.c.). However, majority of corn stover remains lying in the field due to no collection mechanism in maize combines. Therefore, a corn stover collector was developed for collection of maize cobs. The cuboid type collector with a total volume of 1.02 m³ was fabricated by using Mild steel flat and G.I. perforated sheet. It was attached behind a six row self-propelled maize combine and was evaluated for maize variety PMH-2. During harvesting, the weight of collected corn stover varied from 93.20-121.13 kg. The time of filling corn stover collector varied between 15-20 min and time for emptying out between 9-15 min. The field capacity of maize combine harvester is reduced by 13.09% with collector attachment due to time involved in emptying the corn stover collector. The average saving in corn grain with collector (coming at rear) was 70 kg/ha. The overall saving with corn stover collector attachment in time was 75% and in cost 50% respectively.
