A statistical summary is presented of the results of a 3-year (1980-82) screening program for hyperlipidemia (1300 males and 1300 females attending elementary and junior high schools) and for hypercholesterolemia (5300 males and 5400 females in senior high schools) in children (ages 6-18) in the Tokyo urban area. The results indicated that about 5% of the students have suspected hypercholesterolemia. The results for relatively high-risk children revealed a high incidence of hyperlipidemia (dyslipoproteinemia) in obese children. The severity of obesity reflects high serum total cholesterol (TC) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Hence, the atherogenic index (AI) is more sensitive to dyslipoproteinemia in obese children. Significantly high TC and AI values were noted in obese children with hypertension. Other findings also are discussed. (wz)
