The present study was aimed at elucidating the spectrum of lesions in natural cases of paratuberculosis in goats and their relationship with serological response. 12 out of the 20 goats under study, confirmed to be infected with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, were classified as multibacillary (lepromatous) type and 8 as paucibacillary (tuberculoid) type. Goats with the two types of histological lesions differed significantly on clinical grounds, but had comparable gross pathological alterations in intestines and lymph nodes. There existed a positive correlation between macrophage infiltration into the intestinal mucosa, percentage of macrophages with acid-fast bacilli (AFB) and mean AFB load per cell. The proportion of infiltrating lymphocytes and macrophages in the intestinal lesions had an inverse relationship. The antibody levels correlated well with the type of lesions and the mycobacterial load in the intestine. The serological tests detected the heavy shedding MB cases with large numbers of AFB in lesions better than the PB cases.
