Extract: Basal palsma glucose, free fatty acids and insulin were estimated in Indian pregnant women in different trimesters, with non-pregnant women serving as controls. Plasma glucose levels showed a decrease up to 28 wk of gestation, while free fatty acids and insulin showed a progressive increase with advancing gestation. The hyperinsulinaemia observed in the present study in the low income group women subsisting on low calorie diet, could be an adaptive mechanism to mobilise glucose from sources. (author)
