How to succeed as a breast-feeding father
1980
Duquin, Richard
Many prospective fathers are either ill-informed or misinformed about breastfeeding, even though breastfeeding fathers can have a significant role in the care of their infant. A father should learn all he can about breastfeeding before the baby is born, and he should support his wife's decision about breastfeeding. After birth, a father should show interest and concern, encouraging his wife to relax so that milk from the upper portion of the breast is released. A husband must also help his breastfeeding wife with housework, especially in the first month after birth, and he should be aware of a lactating mother's special nutrient needs. Breastfeeding does not prohibit sexual relations, nor does it act as a natural contraceptive. Finally, a father also should relax and enjoy the emotional benefits of breastfeeding. A short bibliography is included. (kbc)
