Effect of Mannan oligosaccharide, Protexin (Probiotic) and their combination on carcass yield and ceacal microflora of broilers

The effect of mannan oligosaccharide, probiotic and their combination was evaluated on carcass yield and ceacal microflora of broilers. Straight runner broiler chicks (240 day old) were reared on deep litter system for six weeks period. The three replicates with 20 birds each in four treatment were maintained under uniform managemental practices. The three groups of birds were supplemented with the dietary treatment of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS), probiotic (Protexin) and their combination at the rate of 1kg/ton in broiler starter and 0.5 kg/ton in finisher feed. At the end of the experiment three birds from each group were sacrificed and their dressing percentage and edible meat percentage were calculated as well as their caecum was frozen into glycerin-salt solution for microbial count. The carcass yield among the treatment groups were significantly differing as compared to the control group. The dressing percentage was 71.79, 76.48, 76.43 and 78.89 whereas the edible meat percentage was 78.6, 83.3, 83.9 and 86.05 per cent in respective treatment groups A, B, C and D. The ceacal content was examined for microbial counts of lactobacillus, enterococci and E. coli. The significant variation was found in ceacal microbial population. The Lactobacillus counts was found 3.67, 8.00, 8.67 and 9.33 CFU x 10⁶ whereas enterococci count was 7.33, 7.67, 7.33 and 7.00 CFU x 10⁶, respectively for treatment A, B, C and D. The colony count for E. coli was 12.33, 6.33, 6.00 and 3.67 CFU x 10⁶ had recorded for treatment A, B, C and D respectively. The dietary supplementation of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS), probiotic (Protexin) significantly improved the carcass yield and beneficial microbes while reduced pathogenic organisms in microflora.
