Utilization of Soybean Germplasm Strains in a Soybean Improvement Program
1972
Hartwig, Edgar E.
Selected strains from the soybean Glycine max (L.) Merrill] germplasm collection were hybridized with the cultivar ‘Hill’ and evaluated in bulk in F₃, F₄, and F₅ generations. Mean seed yields of bulk F₅ populations averaged 15% of the field for Hill. Material was selected from four crosses for further study. Degree of susceptibility of the susceptible parent to the diseases phytophthora rot or bacterial pustule influenced the percentage of resistant types found among Fn lines. The lines selected on the basis of disease reaction or chemical composition produced yields which averaged 70 to 80% of the yield for Hill.
