Forum Communication–“Reply to José Luis Guil-Guerrero's comment on ‘Neanderthals, vitamin C, and scurvy’ by John D. Speth”
2019
Speth, John D.
José Guil-Guerrero has raised a number of issues concerning the suitability of putrefied (i.e., fermented) meat and fish as viable sources of vitamin C for Eurasian Middle and Upper Paleolithic foragers when forced to subsist for extended periods on heavily meat- or fish-based diets. I question a number of the (implicit) underlying assumptions that give rise to Guil-Guerrero's concerns, as well as the appropriateness of data he uses in his critique.
