Rhizobacteria enhance oil content and physiological status of Hyptis suaveolens under salinity stress

We investigate the effect of inoculation of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) i.e. Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes and Bacillus pumilus to evaluate their growth promoting ability in one of the medicinal important plant Hyptis suaveolens (L.) in terms of essential oil content and biomass under normal and salinity conditions. It reduced the negative effect of salinity and enhanced plant growth under salinity. The essential oil content and yield decreased due to inoculation of PGPR, but due to enhanced overall biomass, it showed a positive response. So for utilization of degraded wastelands, inoculation of such PGPR serves as a better and viable option for cultivation of medicinal, aromatic plants as well as other crops.
