Analysis of zinc data from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II)
1985

With certain segments of the U.S. population, primarily the elderly, pregnant women and young children considered to be zinc-deficiency prone, an ad hoc Expert Scientific Working Group was assembled at the Food and Drug Administration's request to examine if zinc fortification should be recommended for cereal grain products. Clinical and biochemical data of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II), 1976-80 were primary resources surveying noninstitutionalized civilians, aged 6 mo.-74 years. Based on the Group's selected criteria for low serum zinc prevalence, probability estimates of occurrence were less than 2 per cent in males and less than 3 per cent in females ages 3-74 years. Recommendations include inclusion of evidence of functional impairments via specific tests on future surveys to more definitively assess zinc nutritional status.(wz)
