Frequency of alcohol consumption and morbidity and mortality: The Yugoslavia cardiovascular disease study

A large prospective study of cardiovascular heart disease (CHD) examined the frequency of alcohol consumption and its association with CHD, death from all causes and from specific causes. The study covered 11,121 Yugoslavian men, aged 35-62, for 7 years. Results indicate that alcohol consumption is inversely related to CHD either causally (some component of alcohol acting as a protective agent) or secondarily (alcohol contributing to higher observed levels of HDL cholesterol). There was no evidence of improvement in total health, however, since death from stroke or accident was higher. Alcohol consumption was associated with elevated systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol, age, and number of cigarettes smoked.
