Climate data file management for agricultural modeling
1993
Robbins, K.D.
This article presents a method to effectively manage climate data information for use in agricultural modeling. The method utilizes the Network Common Data Form (netCDF) system developed by the University Consortium for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). This system offers several advantages over traditional ASCII data file formats. These include: 1) the data files are "self-describing", a description of variables, storage units, the number of observations, and supplemental descriptions of the data are contained within the netCDF file; 2) a single netCDF data file can be used with different modeling applications to reduce data redundancy and simplify file version control; 3) individual data elements, or groups of elements, can be accessed directly without sequentially scanning the file; and 4) data elements can be easily modified, deleted, or appended within the file.
