Composition of lymph chylomicrons from proximal or distal rat small intestine

Lymph chylomicrons secreted by rat proximal and distal small intestine were compared in order to evaluate the capacity of the distal intestine to absorb dietary lipid by secreting triglycerides into lymph. After 6 hours of perfusion with labeled emulsion, the distal intestine secreted 33% less chylomicron phospholipid. Differences in size, in phospholipid and apoprotein content, and in triglyceride:phospholipid and apoprotein:phospholipid ratios were observed. These findings suggest that distal utilization of phospholipid is defective in chylomicron phospholipid synthesis. This defect results in the accumulation of enormous fat droplets in the distal small intestine.
