In a previous paper, superoxide was suggested to be produced in Bombyx mori and other lepidopteran haemolymph plasma. The productive system in Pseudaletia separata was shown to consist of at least two factors of low (LMF) and high molecular weight (HMF). The HMF was purified from B. mori haemolymph plasma by dialysis, gel-filtration and density gradient ultracentrifugation. Lipophorin was identified as HMF. Mixture of a purified lipophorin fraction and a LMF sample resulted in the SOD-inhibitable NBT reduction. By an enzymological analysis in previous and present studies, lipophorin was suggested to catalyse the superoxide production in a first-order reaction. Lipophorin should be regarded not only as a carrier molecule for hydrophobic substances but also as a potential electron transporter, which might open up a new experimental field on lipophorin-mediated metabolisms.
