The needs of the elderly are described to enable home economics teachers and students to meet them. The different nutritional requirements of the elderly include caloric intake, decreased absorption of proteins, minerals and vitamins, and higher fiber content. Psychological problems of the elderly often contribute to dietary pitfalls through eating alone and consuming nutritionally inadequate meals. A number of agencies are listed which assist the elderly, as well as nutritional publications dealing with the elderly.
