Changes in hair trace metal concentrations in some Canadian low birthweight infants

Anthropometric measurements and trace metal content of hair were determined for 37 premature infants, 24 full-term low birthweight infants and 36 full-term control infants at birth and at 1, 3 and 6 months. In all 3 groups of babies, hair zinc declined progressively with age. This decline was not significant in female infants, suggesting that sex may affect changes in hair zinc content. Hair concentration of copper, vanadium and manganese rose in all 3groups during the first 3 months. Hair iodine levels of pre-term infants at all ages were higher than those observed in control babies; no explanation for this trend was apparent. These data indicate that trace metals redistribute through the tissues of the body during early infant development.
