Identification and measurement of the resistances to abscission of intact or unit kernels of sweet corn

Detaching intact kernels of sweet corn may be superior to cutting kernels for food processing, but works only when kernels are not tightly attached to the cob. Kernel attachment strength of sweet corn was measured. Results demonstrated that resistance to abscission depends on sweet corn variety, but not maturity. The test method detected 2 components of attachment, one at the kernel base (abscission resistance) and one at the side adjacent to another kernel (frictional resistance). Abscission strength correlated with kernel mass and completeness of kernel removal. Ease of kernel detachment did increase with maturity, however, when measured by rate of kernel removal, indicating the role of factors other than abscission resistance. Heat treatment had an inconsistent effect on kernel attachment. Testing of kernel detachment could be facilitated by improving the uniformity and genetic integrity of the ears. Future studies of chemical agents which alter abscission are recommended.
