Effects of applying selenium to Chinese jujube on the fruit quality and mineral elements content

The Chinese jujube cultivars 'Xiangzao' and 'Banzao', which came from Pomology Institute, Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Science were used to investigate the effects of foliage selenium spraying on fruit quality and mineral elements. Three concentrations (5, 10 and 20 mg L-1) of Se (in form of Na2SeO3) were applied in this experiment. Spraying was conducted at different periods and times: during the young fruit period, the fruit expanding period and the fruit maturation period. Mature jujube fruits were sampled and assayed. The results showed that: 1. All of the Se treatments could improve the content of total soluble solid, total soluble sugar and Vc, and reduced total titratable acid effectively in fruits, thus improved the fruit flavor and quality. 2. Se spraying on leaves increased Se content in jujube fruits. The Se content in jujube fruits can be increased significantly. 3. Se and Ca, Zn showed a synergistic effect under low Se concentration treatment while antagonism slightly under high Se concentration treatment. Mn content in fruits did not show any correlation with fruit Se content. 4. The best practice would be spraying Se of 10 mg•L-1 twice during the young fruit period and the fruit-expanding period for both ‘Xiangzao’ and ‘Banzao’ in the Taigu area.
