Does the pattern of tissue mobilization dictate protein requirements?

An hypothesis is advanced to propose that the ratio of energy stored or mobilized as protein to the total energy stored or mobilized (i.e., an index of an individual's ability to mobilize protein and fat) may not only influence energy balance but also may determine an individual's protein requirements. This implies that an individual's propensity to use protein as a fuel source is fixed in the individual, regardless of whether the net synthesis of protein is limited by energy intake or protein intake, and serves to explain the observation that individuals matched for age, sex, and body weight have different protein requirements. Data are presented to support this hypothesis.(wz)
