Pigeonpea is a new crop for north-west Himalayan region of India. The cultivation of pigeonpea is found to be very beneficial for hill farmers due to its compatibility in major hill farming systems, highly remunerative, capability to tolerate the slight drought condition and need for diversification in hill agriculture. A comparative study on economics of pigeonpea, rainfed rice and mandua cultivation in the area of Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand was conducted during 2010. The study covered five villages of one block and data on economic aspects of pigeonpea, rainfed rice and mandua cultivation was collected from 90 farmers. The total cost of pigeonpea, rainfed rice and mandua amounted to Rs 14,527, Rs 15218 and Rs. 12541 per hectare respectively and average yields were 16, 23 and 18 q/ha, respectively. Benefit cost ratio of pigeonpea cultivation was 3.62 which were significantly higher than rainfed rice (1.56) and mandua (1.54). Non availability of quality seeds (90.0%), insect and diseases (83.33%), lack of knowledge of sowing time (76.66%) were the major constraints in pigeonpea cultivation in these areas.
