Effects of Different Aqueous Buffers on the Zinc Extractability of Dithizone

The effect of several aqueous buffers on the Zn extractability of dithizone was examined on three Minnesota soils: Zimmerman s, Brainerd sl, and Blue Earth sicl. The five aqueous solutions used with dithizone were water, 1N NH₄OAc, 1N NaOAc, 1N Ba(OAc)₂, and 1N Ca(OAc)₂. Dithizone-1N NH₄OAc extracted the greatest amounts of Zn and dithizone-water extracted the least. The data indicated that the variation in dithizone extractable Zn with different buffers may be related to the buffering capacity of the aqueous solutions, the NH₄ ion, and the soil organic matter present.
