Iron status and anemia in the elderly: New findings and a review of previous studies

A study examined the distribution of 10 commonly requested hematologic parameters used to detect and diagnose anemia and iron (Fe) deficiency in 280 healthy subjects (149 women, 131 men) over age 60 (60-93), and in a younger group of 271 subjects (164 women, 107 men, ages 20-39). Dietary and supplemental Fe intake also were measured. None of the elderly female subjects and only 2 (1.2%) of the younger women had low hemoglobin (Hb) levels (below 12.0 g/dl); 3 (2.3%) of the elderly males and none of the younger males had low Hb levels (below 14 g/dl). Other Fe status measures indicated that anemia or Fe deficiency incidence was similar in the healthy elderly and in young adults when the same criteria were used to assess Fe status. The results of a literature review suggest that health status, race, socioeconomic status, diet, and geographical region are better predictors of high anemia prevalence than age. (wz)
