The effects of protein malnutrition on the rat's circadian patterns of food and water intake

Extract: Food and water intake during 6-hour segments of a 12-hour light-dark cycle were measured for adult rats reared under four dietary conditions. Rats fed a low protein diet as adults had a different circadian pattern of food intake from that of rats fed a high protein diet. The change appeared to be a delay shift in the circadian oscillation. Water, and to a lesser extent food intake patterns were not the same in males and females. Water intake appeared to lag food intake. Daily fluctuations in body weight were greater in rats currently fed the low protein diet than in rats fed the high protein diet.
