Methods for assessing amino acid requirements and the effectiveness of a-keto acid analogs as substitutes for amino acids
1978
Harper, Alfred E.
The methodology used and the results obtained from studies of human requirements for amino acids are summarized. Some of the factors that may infulence the efficiency of the conversion of the alpha-keto acid analogs to the amino acids are examined. These factors include route of administration and the organ distribution and relative activities of the transaminases and enzymes in the pathway for oxidation of the alpha-keto acid analogs. From animal experiments it is evident that efficiency of utilization of different analogs may vary greatly. Graphs are included.
