Phenotypic variability and importance of characters in a F(2) segregating generation of ornamental chili (Capsicum annuum)

The diversity available within the domesticated Capsicum species has been little explored and has not been limited at present yet. The present study aimed to characterize a F2 segregating generation to assess the phenotypic diversity by multivariate techniques. For this, 70 plants were planted in a greenhouse and each entry was sown in three replicates, following a completely randomized design. Each row plot had five plants. The accessions were clustered into two groups by Tocher method based on generalized Mahalanobis distance. In the canonical variable analysis the first three characteristics had 72.12% of the variability. It is concluded that phenotypic divergence among the 70 genotypes studied, demonstrated that they have to use in breeding programs by selecting within this F2 generation.
